Artful Leadership
DIGITAL TOOLKIT
The Servant Leader
The core of servant leadership is that you as a leader feel responsible towards your employees as individuals and you combine that with a sense of stewardship for the organization as a whole. The motivational driving force of a servant leader is the need to serve both employees and the organization. Servant leadership is demonstrated through empowerment and the development of people; by expressing humility, authenticity, interpersonal acceptance, and stewardship; and by providing direction. Remember that none of these are more important than the other; it is the combination of these elements that constitute servant leadership.
This Digital Toolkit will help you understand the essence of servant leadership, as well as provide powerful insights that help you to reflect on your own leadership style and that of others. We would like to invite you to explore each of these characteristics in:
- Module 1 - "The characteristics of the Servant Leader"
- Module 2 - "Cards / Artful assignments"
- Module 3 - "Your Diary, Print it out!"

MODULE 2 - Cards / Artful Assignments
(Try out the 6 characteristics!)
This module offers you reflective and interactive assignments connected to internal and external characteristics and competences of the servant leader and the way they can be perceived by others.
MODULE 3 - The Diary
(Print it out!)
Choose one or various samples below, print the number of items you need and use them as your Diary.
How to use the diary:
1. In the assignments you will find instructions what you can add to your diary to keep track of your insights / learning experiences and your artful expressions (drawings, photos, graphics, diagrams, letters, poetry etc.) during your progress.
2. Notes from (learning) experiences and insights from assignments with individuals and/or groups/teams. These situations can be described in terms of time, place, persons involved, competences employed and their effects; obstacles encountered (internal or external), possible ways to overcome obstacles, etc.
3. Notes from (learning) experiences and insights can also be drawn from (earlier) situations when you already felt a servant leader (or when you could have acted as a servant leader), either individually or within a group/team. What happened? Could you compare these insights to insights from 2.?
4. You can also include a section where you collect feedback of those you have worked with during an assignment, and compare them with your own perception.
5. Make notes of what you would like to ask your trainer/facilitator.
The Diary can also include a section where you can collect feedback of persons you have lead in specific situations, to compare them with their own perceptions.
